As an Early Childhood and Elementary school educator since 1987, I have always been a firm believer in having children do hands on activities to learn. While book learning is important, the girls get enough of that during the school day. At a Girl Scout meeting, you have the opportunity to do things with your troop that are not covered in their classroom.

When I led my younger daughter’s Girl Scout troop, the old badge program was discontinued. I bought the new Brownie binder and at that time, there were fewer than badges total, compared to the 57 available in the old Brownie Try It book.

I had a big decision to make-do the new program or do the retired program.

I decided to do the old badge program, which not only saved the troop money, I wasn’t bound to a handful of badges that required guest speakers. The retired badge program was, in my professional educator’s mind, a much better age appropriate fit for the girls. The bonus part was that the retired badges were being sold for a quarter at most of the Girl Scout shops around the country. I bought everything the girls voted on earning and it cost much less than the new badges.

Unofficial Girl Scout Daisy and Brownie Painting Badges are Perfect for Multi-Level Troops

Because there is a shortage of people willing to lead, many adults find themselves leading multi-level troops. This makes planning meeting harder, since there is more ground to cover in the same time period as a single level troop.

With unofficial badges, your troop can earn the same badge with the same activities. The only difference is that Brownies have to do more, but nothing is stopping Daisy Scout from joining in those as well.

Many of the new badges introduced by the GSUSA over the years has been STEM related. The most popular Brownie and Junior badges for troops to earn-Painting, Potter, Drawing, and Jeweler-were retired a few years ago. In my opinion, the girls need more badges like this, and taking them away was a mistake.
