In a few weeks school and activities will be back in session. Here is a free Back to Troop checklist that you can use to get your scouting year ready for you first meeting!
The second in a series of Back to Troop posts.
Something I have always been is a planner. Flying by the seat of my pants is something that makes me anxious. As a teacher, my entire career has been structured around lesson plans that had to be handed in by a certain deadline each Friday. Lesson plans are a framework and they are also fluid documents. During a lesson, if my students went off on a good tangent or something happened that inspired a “teachable moment”, I went with it and changed course. That is what any good teacher does.
That being said, no school adminstrator would ever permit a teacher to “wing it” for an entire school year. Detailed weekly plans are a part of the job.
Another part of being a teacher is the planning for the year that I do on my own and with my co-teachers and grade level colleagues. The few weeks leading up to school are one of preparedness so we can greet our children with a smile and start the school year on the right foot. We discuss what we are keeping and what we are changing. We sketch out the first month of classes so we can buy the materials we need before the rush of back to school for our own families.
As Girl Scout leaders, it is important that you plan out the first few meetings so everything can go smoothly. Life gets busy with our jobs, our children, our partners, our spouses, our friends…going into the first meeting fully prepared takes a huge weight off of your shoulders. Having a few more already planned will have you looking forward to your meeting time because it is already in the bag!
Inspired by my love of all things organized, I created this free Back to Troop checklist for Girl Scout leaders.
This checklist has your pre-meeting tasks on it, ready to check off as they are accomplished.
