Pass the Bricks Girl Scout Community Service Project

Pass the Bricks is an easy Girl Scout community service project that your troop can do to help underserved communities.

Did you play with LEGO blocks as a child? I did! I loved creating all sorts of houses and buildings out of the squares and rectangles (this was long before all of the kits to make a specific thing came out). When I became a mother in the 1990’s, I bought my daughter her own LEGOS and together we created many structures, and I think I had more fun than she did! When my twins came along in 2002, I was able to play with LEGOS with them.

In preschool, the LEGO table is a staple in every room, as well as having different sized individual pieces, depending on a child’s age. It was always a popular spot during free play in my classroom.

LEGO blocks teach spatial relations, balance, fractions, and so much more. I even used LEGO blocks as part of my Girl Scout Senior GIRLtopia Journey a few years ago.

What is the LEGO Pass the Bricks Program?

The Pass the Bricks Program collects preowned LEGOS, sanitizes them, and then new sets are designed and sent to children who might otherwise not be able to have access to them.

How Can My Troop Participate in the Pass the Bricks Program?

At the Pass the Bricks website, there is a list of states and drop off places.

Your troop can do one or more of these activities to bring attention to this project and collect LEGOS.

  • Create a flyer that can be passed out at school, sent to their parents’ office, or posted to their parents’ social media page.
  • Ask family and friends by calling or doing walkabout the neighborhood (with an adult helper)
  • Create a short video that can be put on their parents’ social media pages
  • Attend the monthly Service Unit meeting and ask other leaders for their troops to help (have a flyer for information that they can pass around)
  • Have parents ask on the local NextDoor of Buy Nothing groups for donations

Is the Pass the Bricks program something your troop would be interested in doing?
