Get the tissues ready-your Girl Scout Ambassadors are graduating high school! Gone are the little girls dressed in Daisy blue. Standing before you are young women who are ready to venture into their next chapter of their lives.
Graduating high school is more than just a ceremony—it’s a celebration of years of hard work, growth, and transformation. For Girl Scout Ambassadors, wearing a Girl Scout graduation cord is a powerful and symbolic way to honor that journey.
These cords aren’t just decorative—they tell a story. They represent a young woman’s commitment to leadership, service, and community. They say, “I didn’t just go to school—I made a difference along the way.”
Girl Scout Graduation Cords are a Symbol of Dedication
To be a Girl Scout Ambassador is to take on some of the highest levels of challenge and leadership in Girl Scouting. These young women have likely completed journeys, earned badges, taken action in their communities, and possibly even achieved the prestigious Gold Award. That cord is a visual reminder of the time and energy they invested—not just in themselves, but in others.
A Connection to Something Bigger
Girl Scouts isn’t just a club—it’s a global movement. By wearing a graduation cord, Ambassadors visibly connect themselves to the generations of women who have gone before them and the ones who will follow. It’s a quiet but powerful nod to the legacy they’re part of, and a reminder that their Girl Scout journey continues, even after high school.
A Celebration of Identity
Wearing the Girl Scout graduation cords is a way for Ambassadors to show pride in a part of their identity that has shaped them. It reflects years of being part of a sisterhood committed to courage, confidence, and character. In a sea of caps and gowns, that flash of green and gold tells the world: I am a Girl Scout, and I always will be.
Can Your Troop Wear Girl Scout Graduation Cords at Their Ceremony?
There are rules to follow and each school district is different. Some schools permit outside activity cords while others do not. Leaders or parents will need to contact their child’s high school guidance counselor and see what the rules are.
What if You Are Told That Your Girls Cannot Wear Girl Scout Graduation Cords?
For my daughter and her friend, it was a non-issue for them to wear their Girl Scout graduation cords when they walked. I emailed the guidance counselor and she said yes.
Unfortunately, that is not the case in all schools.
If your guidance counselor says it is not allowed, your troop and you can do the following:
- Ask to be sent the official district written policy about wearing outside cords. If there are none, then they do not have a leg to stand on.
- See if other organizations, like the Boy Scouts, can wear cords. If they are able to wear cords while your troop cannot, ask why there is discrimination. Tell the counselor and the principal your troop and you will be writing to the superintendent and posting this policy discrimination all over social media. Tell them you will also go to the local news station. This is a big battle and one where your girls can advocate for themselves. Have them start a letter writing or email campaign.
- Use the cords or pictures only and then put them in a shadow box.
Unofficial Girl Scout Graduation Cords
These are budget friendly.
At the Girl Scout Shop, as of this writing, Girl Scout graduation cords are $31.00 plus tax. I will be honest and tell you that since my daughter’s graduation in 2021, her cords have been sitting on a hanger in her closet. They cost significantly less back then.
If you would rather save money, here are unofficial graduation cords that your Ambassador Scouts can wear at their ceremony or for pictures. The only difference between these cords and the official ones is that the cords in the Girl Scout Shop have a gold trefoil on it.
That’s it.
Crafty people can add their own kind of charm of they want or just wear these as is.
Unofficial Girl Scout Graduation Cords
These cords are 2/3 less in price than the official ones. Use your resources wisely!
