This free Girl Scout Food Allergy Awareness program and patch is something your troop can earn together.
When I was growing up, no one I knew had any food allergies. Fast forward to my early teaching career, and I can only remember one student with a peanut allergy. I often made food with my class as part of the learning experience and did not need to think about what we made.
As the years progressed, I had san increasing number of students with all kinds of allergies. While some were easy to navigate (bananas, mangos, strawberries, and oats), others were not (eggs, gluten, and dairy). Baking with my students became more challenging, as I had to find I acceptable adaptations.
As a Girl Scout leader, being aware of food allergies is part of your role. Whether you are earning a cooking badge, cooking for fun, or creating meal plans for camping, it is important to be aware of what your girls can and cannot have to eat, as it literally can set off a life or death reaction.
This free Girl Scout Food Allergy Awareness Program, with a patch that can be purchased after earning it. There are ten activities your troop can do, so you can pick the ones that fit your age group.
Please note: Your Council has the patches, as they cannot be ordered as a troop. There is a list of participating Councils. If yours is not listed, you can contact another Council and see if they will let your purchase the patches.
Whether or not you have girls in your troop with food allergies, the Girl Scout Food Allergy Awareness badge is one that will benefit everyone in your troop.
