As the cost of participating in the GSUYSA continues to rise, many troop leaders are looking for practical ways to make Girl Scouting more affordable and welcoming for every family.
For the 2026–2027 membership year, Girl Scouts of the USA lists annual girl membership dues at $65, up from previous years. That is before adding troop dues, badges, activity supplies, field trips, uniforms, handbooks, camping expenses, and other costs that can quickly add up.
For some families, another $20–$40 or more for an official vest simply isn’t an expense they can comfortably take on. And when you multiply that cost by an entire troop, the expense can become significant.
This is where unofficial uniform alternatives can be a great troop solution.
Girl Scout Uniform Alternatives Can Help Every Child Feel Included
The purpose of a Girl Scout uniform is to create a recognizable, unified appearance and provide a place for girls to display their pins, badges, and awards. Girl Scouts currently describes the vest, sash, or tunic as the element used to display official pins and awards.
But there is an important distinction between having an official uniform and requiring every family to purchase one.
Girl Scout guidance has historically emphasized that having a uniform is not required for membership, although uniforms may be required for certain ceremonies or events.
For regular troop meetings, service projects, community activities, field trips, or other situations where an official uniform is not specifically required, an affordable alternative can make a lot of sense.
It can also eliminate an uncomfortable situation where one girl arrives in a brand-new official vest while another doesn’t have one because her family couldn’t afford it.
Girl Scouts should never be about who can afford the most.
