As the weather warms up, your troop can celebrate Earth Day and earn Girl Scout badges.
As the weather begins to warm up, it is time to go outdoors! Whether you are camping, going on a hike, or sitting on blankets outside your meeting place, this is the perfect time to reflect about our planet and the environment.
Earth Day and the Girl Scout Law
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 and is a day dedicated to protecting the planet. It began in 1970 to raise awareness about environmental problems like pollution, littering, and the loss of plants and animals. Today, Earth Day encourages people of all ages to take action, big or small, by recycling, conserving water, planting trees, reducing waste, and caring for the natural world around them.
Earth Day connects to the Girl Scout Law, especially the promise to “use resources wisely” and to “make the world a better place.” When Girl Scouts pick up litter, reuse materials for crafts, learn about renewable energy, or protect wildlife habitats, they are living out the Law in real and meaningful ways. Caring for the Earth also supports being responsible for what we say and do, since our everyday choices, like using less plastic or saving energy, directly impact the planet and future generations.
