Are you looking for ways to give back to the community this month? Here are 3 Girl Scout service projects your troop can do in March.
After a long, and for many, cold cookie season, it is time to get back to meetings not related to cookies. Because this month has Girl Scout Week, it is the perfect opportunity to do a service project.
Make a “Birthday in a Bag” for Local Food Pantries
Since March marks the 114th anniversary of Girl Scouting, why not share the celebration? Many families utilizing food pantries have the essentials, but “extras” like birthday party supplies are often out of reach.
My troop did this activity for Founder’s Day back in October 2012. It was a lot of fun and also very meaningful.
Have the girls decorate reusable gift bags and fill them with a box of cake mix, a tub of frosting, candles, birthday napkins, and a small toy or streamers. Add these free gift tags to the kit.

Women’s History Thank You Kits
In honor of Women’s History Month, task your troop with identifying “hidden figures”-women in your local community who deserve a shout out and a pat on the back. It could a teacher, someone in local government, someone who runs a food bank or women’s shelter, or a first responder.
Create small kits containing a handwritten note of thanks and a small treat bag. For example, it could have a tea bag or box of tea, honey sticks, and a note that says, “We appreciate everything you do for our communi-tea”.
Spring Cleaning for Animal Shelters
As people start their spring cleaning, animal shelters often see a dip in their supplies. March is a great time to collect those gently used items that people are looking to clear out of their closets.
The girls will organize a drive for old towels, blankets, and unopened pet food. For a hands-on element, the girls can spend a meeting braiding scrap fabric into tug-toys for shelter dogs. My troop actually did this activity on a large scale for their Bronze Award in April 2014.
This activity helps reinforce the “Responsible for what I say and do” line of the Law, teaching girls about the care and cost associated with animal welfare, as well as being “Considerate and Caring” to our animal friends.
Restock a Little Free Library
March 2nd is Read Across America Day. If your community has Little Free Libraries or community bookshelves, they are likely looking a little sparse after the winter months. Have your girls collect books from their homes that they no longer use that they will donate to your town’s Little Free Libraries. If you want them to do a small craft, they can create a bookmark and place it inside with a special note.
If you are unsure where there are Little Free Libraries in your area, you can check out Little Free Library online or on their app. It’s free.
